Welcome to the Village of Custer, which is located in Mason County in western Michigan approximately 13 miles east of the Lake Michigan shoreline.

Custer was incorporated as a village in 1896. The village is a rural community with a population of 272 (2020 census) and is located along the U.S.10 Highway.

At the turn of the 20th century, Custer’s business district was
located next to the railroad tracks between Madison Avenue and Main Street. Some of the original buildings are still standing. When the state expanded Highway 10, most businesses relocated along its corridor.

The Pere Marquette river is a big draw to the area and is within walking distance of the village. It is a haven for year-round outdoor enthusiasts and is used for fishing, canoeing and kayakers.

The village is home to a sculpture titled “ Johnny’s Bandstand” that is part of the Mason County Sculpture Trail. It can be found in the park located one block south of the traffic signal.

Come and visit us anytime and see what the village has to offer.
